So you’re thinking about a Protective Style?

On a warm day in August 2020 a miracle happened- Crops Barber and Beauty partnered with Beauty is Ke and our Protective Style Menu was born! Ok, maybe it wasn’t that simple but the end result is the same, Ke is available at Crops five days a week specializing in protective services for textured hair.

So here you are, thinking about getting a protective style. Ke and Madelyn sat down to put their heads together and list everything you need to know before you take the leap. Here’s a little run down on what to expect when you come in.

  1. Deep Clean

    1. Ke will begin your protective style with a thorough clarifying shampoo to remove any lingering conditioner or product build up. This is especially important if the service is for a child. It’s normal to have a heavy hand when it comes to conditioning curls, we want the detangling to be as painless as possible. However, too much conditioner left on the hair can cause protective styles to slip or frizz prematurely.

    2. Detoxing your hair is something we recommend as part of a healthy hair routine. You can read more about our clarifying shampoos here

  2. Deep Conditioner

    1. We have a variety of hair masques that can address moisture, protein, or bond restoration. Ke will choose the best conditioner that will nourish your curls while they’re in their protective style.

  3. Heat Protectant

    1. Most protective styles are done on blow dried hair so Ke will choose a heat protectant to make sure your strands remain healthy during the service. She may also apply products designed to add shine, softness, or volume if you’re having a silk press.

  4. Blowdry

    1. Again, most protective styles are done on blow dried hair so Ke will dry and stretch your curls so your style lasts.

    2. If you would like your hair trimmed it can almost always be done after the blowout. Ke will grab a cosmetologist to dust your ends before she moves forward with your protective style. Trims are an additional $15-27.

  5. Style

    1. Ke will begin your protective style. Some styles can take much longer than others so it might be a good idea to pack snacks or a bottle of water. If you’re scheduled for a lengthy service such as knotless box braids Ke will chat with you to plan designated break periods where you both can snack and take bathroom breaks.

    2. If you’re getting a silk press you have the option of wearing your hair straight & flat, straight with body, curly, or wavy. It’s a good idea to look at Ke’s instagram for inspiration so you know what you want when you come in.

FAQ’s

  • Do I still need to wrap my hair at night if my hair is in a protective style?

    • Yes! Ke always recommends a silk bonnet regardless of the style. If you have trouble keeping a bonnet on at night then she recommends a silk pillowcase.

  • How do I take my protective style down?

    • Hair is delicate, especially curls, and removing braids shouldn’t be rushed. Make sure to take them apart gently and take your time. If the service is for a child, or you would feel more comfortable having Ke remove them we can certainly schedule that for you.

  • How long should I wait between protective styles?

    • Everyone’s hair is different and some hair types can handle more pulling than others. Ke recommends going at least a week to let your curls settle back in and drop, especially so we can assess how much length you’ve acquired. As always, we recommend planning your hair appointments in advance so don’t be afraid to ask Ke what your next few months should look like in terms of rotating protective styles, trims, and wash & go’s.

  • How long does my protective style last?

    • Depends on the style- they can last anywhere from a week to 3 months depending on the style and how well you care for it.

  • How do I care for my scalp while my hair is in a protective style?

    • Ke recommends applying a treatment oil to your scalp 1-3 times a week between washing. She also cannot stress enough how important a bonnet as night is! Sleep care will determine 90% of how well your style lasts. Everything else including wash routines, drying instructions, and more is situational and Ke can make recommendations based on your specific needs and the protective style.

  • Should I come with my hair washed?

    • No. Ke will cleanse your hair. If you insist on washing it please make sure the conditioner is thoroughly rinsed from your hair.

  • How should I wrap my hair for a shower?

    • If you’re looking to preserve your silk press Ke recommends wrapping your hair twice: one silk bonnet underneath one shower cap. This will protect your hair from both water and steam while reducing any friction.

  • Do I bring my own hair?

    • Yes. Don’t hesitate to reach out to use via email at info@cropsbnb.com for hair recommendations. This way we can send you direct links.

If you have any other questions Ke offers complimentary consultations where she can go over everything from pricing to at home care.
